Students And Lecturers Of The Development Studies Department After The Seminar

It is now a tradition for the University of Makeni Development Studies Department to organize seminars annually for the final year students of the department. This year’s seminar was held recently at the Fatima Campus.

Head of Department Unisa Patrick Kamara confirmed that over 50 final year students participated in the seminar. In his address to the students Mr. Kamara said the seminar was organized to instill skills that would enable students to think outside the box and be job creators rather than job seekers.

In his address to the students of the department, Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Turay described the seminar as a yard stick to face the challenges of globalization when they leave the shores of the University. “To overcome the challenges of globalization you have to think locally and globally” said Professor Turay, advising the students to be innovative, adaptive and express the ability to manage time and space.

Keynote Speaker Mariama Maco Conteh

This year’s keynote speaker was Mariama Maco Conteh, a graduate of the department. Other speakers included Dr. Rebecca Esliker (a leading psychologist in Sierra Leone) and Mohamed S. Conteh (Director of an organization called MADAM Sierra Leone and founder of Sierra Leone Network on the Right to Food). This year’s theme was “Globalization and it challenges facing students”.

In their presentations the speakers, informed the students that the major challenge they will face when they graduate is the lack of internet connectivity in the country and the ability to use social media as global tool for change . They said for students to overcome the challenges of globalization facing them , universities must introduce undergraduate programmes targeting the job market. Students must be ready to fail many times before succeeding in life, and must be able to make use of the available opportunities around within and outside their environment.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Robert Chakanda

The Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development and the Director of Planning and Economic Development delivered this year’s induction lecture to more than 50 UNIMAK masters students on designing the country’s 4th Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP4).

Vice Chancellor of UNIMAK welcomed the Deputy Minister Dr. Robert T. Chakanda and the Director of Planning and Development Unit of the same Ministry, Dr. Sheka Bangura. Professor Turay said the presence of the two most senior personnel of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development at UNIMAK shows that the Ministry is decentralizing the process of designing the development plan of the country. “This means the people in rural Sierra Leone are becoming part of the process of their own development” Professor Turay opined. He suggested that the District and City Council development plan be cascaded into wards, chiefdoms, districts and the regions of the country.

This is the third time economic development practitioner Dr.Sheka Bangura has delivered a public lecture marking the beginning of the academic year for the Masters in Sustainable Development students.

Many of the students that attended this year’s lecture raised concerns and asked the Deputy Minister and the lecturer many questions. Like most of the students Steven Bockarie Mansaray praised the effort of the ministry to come down to their level but raised some concerns on the poor road network that is debarring the transportation of agricultural goods from the villages to the bigger cities. Some of these villages close to the Guinean border are using the Guinean currency instead of the Leones. The New Direction PRSP 4 should therefore consider improving Agriculture and focus more on industrialization.

Hassan A Sesay suggested that the PRSP 4 should make rural Sierra Leone very attractive with social amenities that will discourage urban migration . “Sierra Leone is still referred to as a fragile state because the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission are not implemented and the things that brought about the decade long civil conflict in the country are still visible” said Mr. Sesay.

Mabinty Tholley raises Emma as a single parent. Like most parents that attended this year’s congregation, Mrs Tholley is a petty trader in Freetown that said she sacrificed a lot for her daughter to complete her studies. “It takes the grace of God to pay her fees annually and send money for her feeding every month” Mrs Tholley explained in an interview after the graduation.

On Tuesday 2nd April 2019 Dr Sinead Walsh, the former Irish Ambassador to Sierra Leone, launched her book “Getting to Zero” which addresses issues of the Ebola Outbreak in Sierra Leone. In her presentation during the launching she said the key questions were: What lessons have we learned? What lessons have we not learned? How do we use the experiences of Ebola?

Dr Sinead Walsh

Her book covers the areas that were very critical to the Ebola response, and these include community engagement, leadership and coordination, politics, accountability and corruption, working with existing government assistance and the importance of individuals during the response. Following the outbreak in Sierra Leone a lot has been done to strengthen the health system. Presently the Ministry of Health and Sanitation now has a strong disease surveillance system.

Ambassador Walsh said there were a lot of mistakes made during the outbreak. “We want to write down the mistakes that led to over 3000 people losing their lives.  A lot of people built their opinions on the conspiracy theory. Because of this we experienced something that was extraordinary and we don’t want the lessons of the outbreak to be forgotten” she said.

The book has been launched in UK, Ireland, South Africa, United State of America and also planned to be launched  in South Sudan.

Dr Sinead Walsh is currently the EU Ambassador to South Sudan. She has worked for Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 2009. She was a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative in 2016/17. Prior to this, she served as the Ambassador of Ireland to Sierra Leone and Liberia and the Head of Irish Aid in the two countries, based in Freetown from 2011 to 2016.

Hundreds of people from the from the public and private sector witnessed the book launch. Notable among the people that attended the launch was the University of Makeni Representative Professor Sarah Koroma.
